Car Maintenance: The Basics

Most of us seem to think of our cars or vehicles as simply a means of transportation

. But in order to ensure that your means of transportation remains reliable, you should take care of it, and that means maintenance. At the end of the day, a car or vehicle is a machine, and unless you take care of it properly, that machine will eventually break down and, most likely, when you least expect it. Also, if you let car problems go unresolved or you don't check on your car and get Mazda parts replaced before they break down, you'll probably end up having a worse problem than you would have had if you had taken the time to check your car every so often. And the repairs for that problem may very well cost you more than it would have if you had caught it before it happened. By knowing and performing basic maintenance checks on your car, you'll save yourself some time and money in the long run.

Check your tires. You need tires that are in good shape, if for nothing else than safety. Bald tires could cause you to skid on wet roads or you could get blowouts that could cause major accidents and major damage to your vehicle. Check your tire pressures once a week and your tread depth just as often if you travel a lot in your vehicle. Also make it a point to rotate your tires every 5,000 - 8,000 kilometers to ensure that the wear on your tires is even.

Check your belts. The engine is the heart of any vehicle. You don't need to know how to take it apart, but it would be useful to know where all the pertinent parts are. Check your belts regularly. Timing belts, fan belts, and other similar belts will eventually break given enough time. And replacing a belt that has snapped can be much more expensive, not to mention easier, than replacing it before it has a chance to break.

Check your levels. Your car's engine needs certain fluids to run properly, like brake fluid, coolants, transmission fluid and oil. For example, running out of brake fluid could be catastrophic if it happens while you're driving. Make sure you know where the reservoirs are for each of these fluids and check the levels regularly to prevent damage to your engine. While you're at it, you should also clean and check your battery terminals for corrosion or other residue.
