Renting a vehicle

Renting a vehicle. It is such a simple thing to do. Make a few phone calls, arrive at the rental location with paperwork in hand including your valid IDP or driver's license and a credit card and you are on your way. What could go wrong?

Because of the many ins and outs of renting a vehicle, you might want to hold your opinion or what you think you know until after you have successfully rented the vehicle. You will find that there are many obstacles that can obstruct the process more than a wee bit. First, let's start with the rental company and why this is an important factor in renting. If the company you choose to go with is a good reputable company, they will stand behind their agreements and rental vehicles and not be only about making money by any means possible. This factor can make a rental process one that you will not soon forget.

So what lies ahead for you? Surprisingly enough many people have problems from the moment they arrive at the rental counter. The first problem that may occur is one involving having the proper paperwork when they arrive at the rental location. Most rental car companies will tell you what will be required from you when you arrive to pick up your vehicle but if they don't be sure to inquire as to exactly what documentation you will need. Other things to check in advance are the age restrictions on rentals, additional documentation you will need when using a debit card, and also any other insurance documents that you might need to complete the rental process.

Usually headaches follow those who are unprepared when trying to rent a vehicle and a deadline is fast approaching. Other problems that you should be aware of and have a clear understanding of how the rental company will handle these situations generally include vehicle breakdowns that just happen while you are on the road or accidents that just happen during the trip. The last thing anyone who is renting a vehicle needs is to be stranded, pretty much holding the bag and the possibility of skyrocketing bills that such events can incur. This can easily have the characteristics of a very bad experience.

In reality there have been some rental companies that have levied charges against customers that have successfully paid for and honored their rental agreement, several months after the fact. While this is certainly not the standard common procedure for any reputable company there are however instances where the company paid fees and tolls up front and were trying to recover these monies. This is just another good example why anyone should always know the details of their rental agreement before they start the rental journey.

The key to a good rental experience is renting from the right company and this can be done by merely doing a little research on the company prior to contacting them about one of their rentals. The company should have a good reputation and a good customer service department. A good company will disclose all the important facts before they ever ask to be paid and will take the time to help you understand any part of the rental agreement that is unclear before you take possession of the vehicle.
