Every pet lover already has plenty of duties when it comes to taking care of their furry little friend. Pet lovers who must travel long distances away from home often consider taken their cat along for the trip. When you consider car travel with cats for an extended period of time, there are many things to be cautious of. Some animals become very ill during car rides. If this is the case, then you are better off just leaving the cat at home. Make plans to care for your cat while you are traveling.

The top priority when dealing with car travel with cats is to make sure they are completely safe and secure. Do not let the cat have free reign in the vehicle. This could become a very dangerous situation, especially for the driver. Find a safe and durable cat carrier to take along with you. Be certain that the carrier is not only large enough for the cat, but large enough for it to wander around in there. You don't want the carrier to be too large though, or the animal may get tossed around with every turn. A quality pet carrier doesn't have to cost a lot of money, but you do want to be sure it is good enough to properly care for your cat.

Give your cat some time to get acclimated to riding in the car. Cats can be skittish, and they may get ill at first. Give them a chance to work through it, until it gets too serious. Car travel with cats can be tricky, and taking them for a few shorter rides beforehand is a great idea. Animals generally become a bit stressed when they are first thrown into a situation they are not familiar with. Give him a chance to work through this on the practice trip, rather than waiting for the real trip. Keep an eye on the cat to watch for signs of a serious issue. Cats do not normally pant so if you notice your cat panting that may be a sign of an issue.

Car travel with cats doesn't have to be as difficult as it sounds. Just make sure you have planned ahead and have sufficient food and water, and are prepared to take a bathroom break if needed. Stop regularly and give the cat a chance to stretch its legs, unwind, and do its business if need be. Put down some towels or absorbent cloth in the carrier, never use cat litter. That will just end up being more than a mess than it's worth. Experiencing car travel with cats can be a fun part of a family vacation, if done correctly.
