Cardiovascular Artery Disease Can Turn Deadly Unless Steps Are Taken to Reverse Its Progression
The heart is the center of the universe when it comes to the cardiovascular system. The heart weighs about 1 pound, pumps around 100,000 times a day, and the human body cannot survive without it. But the heart in many ways is at the mercy of the arteries, which are the conduits that allow oxygen rich blood to seek out and nourish every cell in our bodies.
In cardiovascular artery disease it is the arteries narrowing over time that presents the greatest risk to our health. This condition is known as atherosclerosis.
In atherosclerosis damage to the arteries encourages the formation of plaque deposits in the inner most area of the artery known as the lumen. Plaque can start to build as early as the age of 7 (some research suggests even earlier) and will continue to build over time unless aggressive steps are taken through lifestyle, diet, prescription medications, and supplementation to reverse the accumulation of cholesterol, dead cells, and calcium.
While these are important tenants in the fight against cardiovascular artery disease one should not overlook the fact that damage to artery lining is the primary factor that sets the whole cardiovascular artery disease wheel in motion.
For this reason I would like to direct your attention to what I believe to be the most understated cause of cardiovascular artery disease, that of high homocysteine levels.
Homocysteines are amino acids release when we digest protein. Once released they circulate through the blood roughing up the lining of our arteries. What is even more amazing about this phenomenon is that currently there are no studies disputing this fact, and many well run clinical studies supporting this premise.
Now the good news is that with just a little meal management and/or supplementation you can neutralize these dangerous amino acids. Homocysteine levels can be kept in normal limits through a diet that includes folic acid found in leafy green vegetables (kale, turnip greens), oranges, and fortified cereals; vitamin B6 found in potatoes, bananas, and fortified cereals. These nutrients seem to help convert homocysteine in the blood into other substances that do not cause cardiovascular artery disease. If the vitamin B rich foods above don't agree with you there are liquid vitamin B supplements that can be just as effective. Nevertheless you should check with your doctor for his expert opinion on this matter.
But for most while reducing the chances of the formation of new plaque deposits is appealing it doesn't address reversing existing plaque deposits which have lead us to a full blown case of cardiovascular artery disease.
To do this you will need to make some very basic changes, and stick with them from now on. These would include holding your saturated fat intake to under 7 percent, your cholesterol intake under 25 percent of calories, not smoking, working with your doctor to manage diabetes and blood pressure concerns, setting aside 30 minutes a day for physical activity, consuming 10 grams of soluble fiber daily, substituting baked fish for red meat a couple of times a week, and addressing any weight issues you may have.
Along with these very basic steps your doctor may feel the need to prescribe a statin medication, or may even suggest an over the counter cholesterol supplement, or a daily regime including fish oil.
The steps above won't immediately cure the problem, rather create a window of opportunity for your body to begin to reverse the damage which has been done over the years.
