What exactly is marketing? Marketing includes all of the neat little ways that a company will use to get you to purchase a product
. They could use product placement with the funny commercials, packaging, distribution, and have great public relations. Remember the pet rock? It was a novel idea there really wasn't a use for it but it sold because of the great marketing that took place. If you feel that you have the next great marketing idea inside of you then maybe a career in the marketing industry is for you.
Do you have any related work experience? Advertising would be a good transition to the marketing industry. It entails coming up with an idea or brand for a product or company. Merchandising is also another area that would be a good transition. Merchandising is used in a way that makes sure the products you see are appealing and placed just the right way to get you to purchase it. You will need to be creative and able to think outside the box.
Do you have any computer experience? Most companies will now require that you have knowledge of all office software to do reports or programs. This is vital that you have some type of know how in this area as well.
In a retail environment you will need to be able to work any hours that the company has available. In most interviews they will ask this of you. This is a trick question. They want to weed out those persons that don't want the job badly enough. You may end up with the worst hours to start out but you will eventually get the desired hours you want. This won't apply to you work with a manufacturer.
You will need a marketing or related degree in finance, or economics. If you are still in school and applying for a position let them know your degree choice this may be the factor that gets you the job. Your school should have a career or job service office. Contact them as they will usually get leads directly from companies. The same holds true for those of you that have graduated. As an alumnus you can go back and get job leads as well. They might charge you a small fee for this service, but it will be worth it.
How is your credit? Most people don't realize that companies perform background checks on people that they are considering hiring. If your credit is bad especially if you might be in retail they want to know if they can trust you with their merchandise and money. If this is subpar you need to clear this up pronto. All of those debts you haven't paid off are hurting you now.
A career in the marketing industry is great for those that enjoy the intricate details of bringing a product to the marketplace. You get to help create brands and maybe even a bit of product royalty. As new items are invented everyday there are plenty of products that you can get to be a part of.
