Career In Mass Communication And Journalism Part -1
Journalism is about finding out what is happening in the world and letting people
know about it: it is both the collection and spreading of news as well as the building of public opinion. This is as opposed to media, which also includes pure entertainment material.
The two broad areas in journalism are Reporting and Production. Specific roles depend on the technology one works with. Journalism can broadly be classified as
(i) Print Journalism: Print Journalism includes newspapers, magazines and journals. In print journalism one can work as editors, reporters, columnists, correspondents etc.
(ii) Electronic Journalism: Electronic journalism includes working for Radio, Television and the Web. In the web, skilled people are required to maintain sites by web newspapers and popular newspapers and magazines that have their own web editions. In electronic journalism one can be a reporter, writer, editor, researcher, correspondent and anchor.
Job: The work of a journalist falls in four broad categories: Reporting, Editing, Writing, Camera
Reporting
A. The Job
1.) Attend press conferences, conduct interviews
2.) Travel to sites of major and minor events, within the city and in other parts of the country and the world
3.) Gather first hand report and present them in an unbiased manner
4.) Writing or presenting the news on camera
5.) Special Correspondents report on a particular topic like politics, foreign affairs, sports, finance etc.
6.) Special correspondents must have a special interest in some field to make a success out of it and
7.) Sufficient experience as a reporter to become a special correspondent.
B. Personality Traits
a. Interested in and aware of the news in all sectors
b. Ability to network and build contact various news resources
c. Energetic and tireless to travel and run after news
d. Writing skill or Speaking skills
Editing
Trainees start as sub editors and eventually move on the senior editors and then to Chief Sub Editor. In print, their job involves
1.)Re-writing stories to fit the space assigned
2.)Improve the language, Insert punctuation
3.)Give headlines
4.)Help in page layout.
5.)In electronic media, an editor would
6.)Prepare and sequence tapes shot by reporters before the telecast.
7.)Research and edit footage for stories from the library
8.)Edit the anchorpersons script for grammar and factual errors.
9.)Rewrite the script and sequence stories for final telecast
10.)Manage the sequence and telecast of stories, the script and gives online inputs as the news is being telecast
News /Feature Editor is the right-hand of the chief editor. He or she
1.)Decides on the news to be published / telecast each day
2.)Collects news
3.)Controls the network of correspondents, reporting staff and other news sources
4.)Allocates assignments
5.)Attends editorial conferences.
Chief Editor /Resident Editor: Chief /resident editor is in charge of all functions of the publication or news channel. In a sense, the head of the news channel or paper. His primary responsibility is to manage the functions of collection, selection and presentation of news.

Job Prospects: They can find job with newspaper groups, publishers of magazines and journals, Indian Information Service of the Government, websites etc.
