Who are Forensic Scientists?Forensic scientists are people who evaluate evidence from the places of crimes, victims, vehicles and every other thing related to the crime. It can be anything and everything, ranging from a small tissue paper to a big instrument used in the crime.
What Do They Do?A forensic scientist needs to examine and investigate scientifically whatever data was collected from the crime scene. They form a link between police and justice as their investigation forms a decisive factor in court cases. They are often called as crime lab analysts, but their job requires them to visit crime scenes and co-ordinate with the police. Due to the nature of their work, they might have to work at odd hours in special cases.
Educational QualificationPeople who have a background in computers, chemistry, earth sciences etc can take a bachelor's course in forensic science. In many countries the name of the course may change to some modified forms. The most important aspect of being a crime lab analyst is to undergo proper training (read experience). A better option for people who have bachelor's in forensic science is to go for a masters or related doctoral programs. People who have masters in forensic science have a better shot at high paying jobs than their bachelor counterparts.
Career AspectsForensic scientists are mostly employed by national investigation bureaus. Teaching and trainings opportunities are also available with rewarding pay scales. Many forensic scientists work with private investigators as well. After experience, crime lab analysts can move on to become lab managers, who supervise other forensic scientists.
All in all, the job of a crime lab analyst is not only exciting but you get to learn various aspects about the society in general.
