Career change at 40
Going through or planning to go through a career change at 40 can be a very exciting time that puts a spring in your step and gives you renewed vigour for something new. However, it can also be a daunting and somewhat stressful time. I have had 3 career changes in my 43 years and have personally helped dozens of people during my time as a recruitment consultant.
It is the old adage that still rings true today, "Find what it is you love doing, and you'll never work a day in your life" Going through a career change at 40 should be quite an easy process because at 40 we tend to know what it is we like and don't like and can sometimes springboard from an existing career to some industry associated with this career. Some people of course, may want to break away altogether and pursue something completely new.
I was quite fortunate because I started off as a Tradesman (Engineer) and then left that after 5 years to become a recruitment consultant placing tradespeople into permanent and contract roles. After that I became a Training Consultant placing apprentices into the engineering world, as you can see all these roles was engineering based, so this is one way to approach a career change at 40.
Statistics show that a huge percentage of people as much as 60% do not like or enjoy their current job or position. Perhaps finding a job in whatever your passion or hobby is, may be an option for some people. It is not sometimes an easy process to go through as we are all creatures of habit and we find comfort in familiarity, breaking that habit and altering our routines can be hard when making a career change at 40.
I also feel that the school systems of the world don't really do enough as far as educating the youth in what career options await them, I know this is a debatable topic as parents and career counselors are there too and some schools do and some don't.
My advice would be to simply give your new career change at 40 a good dose of thinking. Try as much as possible to align your career with what it is you are passionate and enthusiastic about. Life is too short to do something we don't like.
If someone had said to me when I was an apprentice that I would be writing articles and putting them on the internet when I am in my forties I would of laughed, but that is the wonderful thing about life you just don't know what lies around the next corner or in the next chapter of our lives. This very process of me writing an article is, I suppose a career change of some sort, even though I still coach and mentor apprentices as my day job, I have signed up to learn Internet Marketing. I enjoy writing articles and I enjoy helping people if I can and Internet Marketing as a business ticks a lot of the boxes. I now use my experiences acquired in life so far in my Internet Marketing business and can give a honest account on certain things.
In conclusion, wanting a career change at 40 is great. Only you, know what your background, interests, passions and dislikes are, the search starts with you getting to reveal these passions clearly and then align your new career to that as much as possible. Perhaps consider Internet Marketing as a career change at 40 because you too can use your experience acquired in your 40 years in this wonderful business.
