Caring For A Bonsai Tree - 3 Tips For A Healthy Tree

Caring for a Bonsai tree can be as involved as you choose to make it

. A brief search and you will find endless information on Bonsai care, regarding every species of Bonsai tree. Immersing yourself in the finer points is one of the attractions of this popular hobby, but a healthy Bonsai requires that you follow only a few basic principles.

As the interest and popularity of Bonsai trees grows, they are becoming increasingly available at common outlets everywhere. These days it is not uncommon to find Bonsai plants at your local superstore, and as a result many plants are given as a gift. Unfortunately, many Bonsai received in this manner are in a poor condition, and will need some tender loving care to bring them back to their best.

These three simple guidelines for caring for a Bonsai tree will hopefully keep your plant in good all round health.

Location

The first thing to do is to find a suitable location for your Bonsai tree. Choose a spot that maintains a constant temperature, a bright and airy position free of draughts is best. Most Bonsai trees like some sunlight for a few hours a day, but make sure your tree is not in direct sunlight for too long. Too much direct sunlight will dry out the soil and roots far too quickly, too little water is the biggest killer of Bonsai trees so always be mindful of how long your plant is exposed to direct sunlight.

Watering

There are many differences of opinion when it comes to watering a Bonsai tree, but as a general rule, keeping the soil moist will keep most trees happy. Avoid over watering as this can kill your Bonsai just as quickly as not watering it. A common symptom of over watering is yellowing leaves. Another good idea is to periodically feed your tree, once every two weeks in growing season, and once a month out of season. Purpose made Bonsai fertilizers are available from specialist outlets, but an ordinary liquid fertilizer is fine. Follow the instructions given and diluting by half will give you a decent fertilizer that is not too strong.

Pruning

The art of Bonsai is to reflect nature in miniature, so with this in mind, pruning your bonsai should be a relatively simple process. Most trees of a certain age will have their own personal silhouette and shape, so it will be easy to see where your tree needs pruning. New growth on your tree will tend to grow either out or up, so any new growth should be pruned in keeping with the silhouette of the tree.
