The roof of your home is a critical system of the home
. Maintaining the roofing is the job of any homeowner who does not want to see his or her valuables be ruined. The good news is that most types of roofing repair and maintenance are fairly straightforward and even simple to do. At the start of each season, make the trip up to the roof to find out how it looks and to handle any damage. This regular maintenance will decrease how often you have to invest in a new roofing installation.
The following steps should be taken:
1. Inspect the roof for loose or missing shingles. Replace these immediately with new product or with older product that is still usable. Shingles are generally just nailed into place.
2. Check the felt material if it is exposed. If so, it needs to be free from holes to prevent water from flowing into the roofing underlayment.
3. If any of the underlayment is exposed, it needs to be protected. Ensure it is not damaged or water logged prior to covering it up. This plywood is what protects your home from water damage.
4. Inspect the edges of the roof. You are looking for any damage. Do check around the chimney and vents on the roof as well. If you notice any areas where water can get in, or that are not secured, use caulk or nails to repair the area.
These simple steps are often enough to help protect your roof and extend its lifetime. Roofing installation is a costly expensive, especially when some basic roof repair is all that is needed. Roofing materials are readily available in most hardware stores to accomplish these repairs.
