Case Appraisal Method For Employment
In the business and professional world, job interviews are conducted perpetually
, and they have very serious consequences for both organizations and individuals. Most people have talents of one sort or another. However, if the individual's talents are not matched to the right job, misery for all might result. Conversely a successful job interview will end in the right talent being placed in the most appropriate job. The case interview technique offers hope for an improved procedure.
It is likely to be the interviewee, and not the interviewer, who feels most pressure in the job interview situation. An applicant for a job usually wants it badly, and is faced with possible rejection and disappointment. The people doing the interviewing are secure, with little obvious risk to themselves. However, the organizations they represent could suffer badly from the wrong decision.
The importance of interviews in the working world makes the need for improved techniques obvious. Like parenting, and other vitally important it has until recently been left up to trial and error until quite recently. Case interview techniques may have existed in the past in a haphazard way. Now, they are being articulated and developed, often through the initiatives of business schools or MBA programs.
Case study job interviews proceed from the premise that vicarious behaviour is an indication of what might transpire in real life. A candidate is presented with a fictitious case, and asked to explain how he would deal with such a situation. For example he might be asked to explain how he would improve sales in an organization under particular circumstances, or what he would in an emergency such as an oil spill if he were an oil company executive.
Candidates' responses will give interviewers an indication of his thought processes and instinctive responses. These can be analysed in light of the requirements of the job that is on offer. No method is foolproof, but the information obtained from this technique may improve the chances of success in coming to a correct conclusion.
This kind of interview represents a class of techniques. Within the class there are many possible variations. For example aspirant investment bankers might be presented with scenarios in which calculations for particular challenges, and sales people might be asked to role play interactions with difficult customers. In some cases a group of candidates may be asked to deal with a situation while observers watch without become involved themselves.
This is roughly the procedure followed in the well known TV series, 'The Apprentice'. The series illustrates how a final decision falls to one responsible person, and how wrong he can be, despite all the information at his disposal. Like most human enterprise the case interview job is not perfect, but it offers an improvement on what has gone on before.
