Herbalism is one of the easiest professions to level, and that's not the best part, its 100% free. You will actually make gold while leveling but the amount that you will earn depends of a string of things, such as which server you play on, how many people plays on your server, which faction you are on and when you put your herbs on the Auction House. Herbalism is mostly used together with Alchemy to make potions, but it's also used with the Inscription professions to make different glyphs, this is why your herbs will be in demand pretty much all the time. People have gotten lazy how in Cataclysm and they are spending more and more gold on the Auction House, so this is a perfect way to make some easy gold as a new player.

-- Angrun (Stranglethorn Vale)

-- Faruza (Tirisfal Glades)

-- Jandi (Orgrimmar)

-- Komin Winterhoof (Thunder Bluff)

-- Martha Alliestar (Undercity)

-- Mishiki (Durotar)

As a beginner, you will be able to pick Peace Blooms, Silver leafs and Earth Roots. These can be found in the Orc / Troll starting area of Durotar, the Tauren starting area Mulgore and the starting area for undeads, Tirisfall Glades. The Peace blooms doesn't sell that good, well you can probably get a decent amount of gold for it but it all depends on which server you are on, but generally speaking, Peace blooms sell for the least amount of gold on the Auction House. Silver Leafs and Earth Roots will give you quite a lot of gold, a fortune if you are new to the game.

People need those low level herbs to powerlevel some of their professions for their new Worgen and Goblin characters. If there are few stacks of either Peace Blooms, Silver Leafs, or Earth Roots on the Auction House I would recommend that you buy every single stack and re post them for 50% higher than you bought them for. This is called monopolizing and unlike the real world, it's 100% legal in World of Warcraft, so you can make a fortune of people whom are too lazy to pick their own herbs.

Once you rise a bit in your herbalism level, you will be able to find herbs such as Mageroyal. The nice thing about the Herbalism profession is that the price of the herbs will constantly increase as you get a higher herbalism level. The Mageroyal can be found in either Westfall, but this is mostly an Alliance place, so I would recommend that you go to the Barrens.
