Causes Of Heartburn - 5 Things You Should Avoid
Suffering from heartburn is not an easy thing and sometimes, there are too many causes of heartburnand it makes hard for anyone to pinpoint what exactly is causing their discomfort.
What triggers heartburn is still a trivia for some but fortunately, science has already determined what causes the stomach acids to travel upwards through the esophagus. Heartburn can be very discomforting and can even damage your esophagus because unlike the stomach, your esophagus does not have the mucus protection from acids.
You do not have to give in to the suffering caused by heartburn. You can determine the causes of heartburnand get rid of anything in your lifestyle that is causing it.
Understanding Heartburn
Before we proceed to what are the top causes of heartburn, we must first be familiar with the lower esophageal sphincter. It is a muscle located on the lower esophagus and it acts as a valve to prevent the stomach contents and acidic juices from traveling upwards. There are some foods, beverages and other factors that cause it to relax prematurely thus, triggering an upward flow of the solid and liquid contents of your stomach. When this happens, heartburn occurs.
So what exactly are the causes of heartburn?
1. Greasy foods and foods high in fat contents
Foods that are greasy and high in fat concentrations slow down the digestion thus, keeping the food in the stomach for a longer period of time. This can increase the pressure on your LES thus, causing a short discomfort on the abdomen part and most probably, cause a long term negative effect on your health as well.
2. Caffeine and chocolate - Caffeinated drinks like coffee, tea and soda can trigger heartburn because it can relax the LES prematurely.
3. Citrus Fruits, Tomatoes - Fruits are healthy but eating fruits high in acid in excessive amounts can trigger acid reflux. The acid is not really the main cause of heartburn but rather, its effect on the body's LES. As mentioned before, your LES if not functioning properly, will allow the stomach acids to flow towards your esophagus.
4. Alcoholic beverages and tobacco - These things should be eliminated in anyone's daily lifestyle because they contain compounds that can relax the LES. This is only a minor effect these bad habits have and you should worry more on their long term effects on your body.
5. Tight Clothes - Tight clothing and belts can increase the pressure in the abdominal area thus, leading to heartburn. It squeezes your mid section and puts too much pressure on your LES thus, forcing it to open and allow the stomach acid to move upwards.
Knowing what are the causes of heartburncan help you avoid these things thus, preventing the start of heartburn. There are a lot of things that you can do to live a healthier lifestyle and you can start by giving up your bad habits and changing your daily diet.
