If a man smokes heavily, it is very likely to affect his sperm production and function. Besides lifestyle health factors, which can be controlled, one of the most common causes of male infertility is a condition known as varicocele. Quite simply, it's a varicose vein in the man's scrotum. The vein is large and can generate heat in the testicles. This affects the sperm. Varicocele is usually a treatable condition, but surgery is required.

The first thing the doctor will want to do is to perform a semen analysis. it's a straightforward test, especially when compared with the tests that women have to undergo. If there is a problem with the sperm (quantity or quality), the doctor will instruct what to do next. Otherwise he'll decide upon the best plan of action, or recommend possible treatments for infertility.
