Causes for heart burn - Learn Them And Avoid Them
Heartburn doesn't have anything to do with the heart but it got its name because the pain seems to have originated in the heart area. There are a lot of causes for heartburnand if you do not want to experience the discomfort it brings, you need to avoid whatever factors that could trigger acid reflux and if possible, change your lifestyle.
One of the major causes for heartburnis the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), a tight muscle at the base of the esophagus which acts like a valve, getting irritated. Foods that are consumed passes through this muscle before finally entering the stomach which are thenprevented from traveling back upward because the LES closes. Unlike the stomach, the esophagus doesn't have a protective layer to protect it from the acid. Heartburn basically occurs when the LES relaxes prematurely thus, allowing the stomach acid to travel upwards towards the esophagus.
Below is a list of things and food that could trigger heartburn:
Chocolate
Everybody loves chocolate but unfortunately, it is one of the major causes of heartburnbecause it contains theobromine, a naturally occurring compound in cocoa, coffee and tea plants that relaxes the muscles of the esophagus, allowing acids from the stomach to travel upward.
Alcohol
Alcohol causes heartburn because it helps increase the stomach acid production and also relaxes the LES prematurely.
Fried and Fatty foods
Other major causes of heartburnare foods that are deep fried and high in fats concentration because it can increase the pressure in the stomach because these are hard to digest. This in turn weakens the LES thus, reflux of the contents of the stomachs towards the esophagus happens. The same concept happens when eating large meals.
Tobacco
Chemical contents of tobacco or cigarettes weaken the LES.
Wearing tight clothes
This may sound weird but wearing tight clothes squeeze the stomach thus forcing its content upwards. As much as possible, avoid wearing tight belts and undergarments that slenderize.
In conclusion
Foods and beverages containing compounds such as caffeine and theobromine prematurely relax the LES thus, forcing the food upwards the esophagus causing heartburn. You can also avoid heartburn by not eating too much and eating your meals hours before going to bed.
If you are one of the millions of people suffering from heartburn, consult with your doctor as soon as possible to get the medications needed to cure this condition. You can also take Ibuprofen and aspirin which are pain relievers capable of easing the pain of heartburn.
Other causes for heartburnthat you should avoid are lifting heavy objects and forcefully coughing since it increases the pressure on your stomach which forces the food contents towards your esophagus.
As much as possible too, avoid foods and beverages high in acid contents because they bring a higher possibility of triggering heartburn. If you also have an unhealthy lifestyle such as smoking packs of cigarettes per day, you should consider eliminating these bad habits from your daily lifestyle since it can cause discomfort as well.
