Cautiously Driving

I was driving through my apartment complex and had just approached a speed bump. As I approached the speed bump, I saw a woman in a huge pickup truck driving through the parking lot fairly fast in front of me. It was obvious that she was preparing to make a left hand turn in front of me. What was also apparently obvious was that she was only checking the traffic in one direction, and this was not the direction that I was approaching from. Instead of continue forward in a straight path over the speed bump, I waited for her to acknowledge the fact that I was sitting practically in front of her as she was preparing to turn. However, she didn't even so much as glance in my direction before she suddenly made her turn and almost crashed into me!

I was well back from where she was turning but because it was early in the morning, she probably figured that it didn't matter what side of the road she drove on. At the last minute (as she was turning), she saw me and quickly corrected herself. At that point, I was already at a complete stopped position, and it is a good thing that I was- otherwise, I would have definitely been involved in an accident. It is the little incidents such as these ones that can wind up turning into something much bigger if we are not careful with what we are doing. You never know when someone is going to drive and not pay attention to the traffic coming from a different direction.

Driving with caution is akin to being a defensive driver. As a defensive driver, you want to make sure that you are always vigilant and aware of what those around you are doing. Does it look as though someone is not paying attention to the traffic flow? Is there someone beside you who is busy talking on their cell phone versus actually paying attention to whatever it is that they should be doing? What sorts of things do you do while you are driving your car? What can you improve on?

If you are driving with children, make sure that they have something safe and fun to occupy their time with. The last thing that you want to have to worry about is your own child distracting you. However, part of driving cautiously also means making sure that those you care about (who happen to be driving with you) are protected as you travel on various roadways. Seatbelts should always be buckled, and while you may love that new song that just came out, try to keep the music volume at a respectable level- respectable enough so that you don't disturb other drivers when you are stopped and also low enough so that you can hear when and if any emergency vehicles approach in the distance.
