Cb Radio Equipment: Cb Radio That Leaves Your Vehicle Intact

When you decide to become a CB operator, there are choices to make about the type of equipment you want to use

. From simple to complex, small to large, fixed and portable, 120 volt or 12 volt, type of antenna, there are lots of choices.

Choose from CB base stations various mobile units and small battery powered handhelds. Some portable radios use 'AA', 'C', or 'D' cells outside the vehicle and can plug into the vehicle cigarette lighter socket when used in the vehicle.

Antennas are either a fixed whip, a telescoping whip attached to the handheld or you can plug in a magnetic mount for better range in the vehicle. The magnetic antenna may be prevented from scratching your paint by placing a thin piece of plastic wrap between the magnet and the paint. After a few uses, this is likely to need replacing.

A small and compact CB radio transceiver will give better results than most handhelds, and may cost less. Mounting them under the dash in a small interior is an option. Remember, the location is one where you should be able to see it and reach it without interfering with driving. Some wiring is needed for these.

CB radios will only output 4 watts. Your antenna can sometimes be tuned to give twice the effective range as the factory equipment. Choosing good quality makes sense.

CB radio uses the 10 meter band, which equates to a frequency of about 27 Megahertz. The speed of light is 3.1 times 10 raised to the power of 8 meters per second. To find the frequency, divide the speed of light by the wavelength and to find the wavelength, divide the speed of light by the frequency.

Remember, everything needs to be in meters. In radio hobbyist sites, CB radios at 11 meters is usually found together with the licensed and more powerful 10 meter transceivers. You can install 10 meter sets in cars and some of them may be adapted to use on the CB frequencies. Make sure that the extra power is legal in your area before doing this. Of course, the greater the output power, the greater the range.

Be aware that you are sharing the bandwidth with lower powered sets and be extra careful not to walk all over another transmission.

The designated emergency channel, channel 9 in the US, may still be monitored by REACT, (Radio Emergency Associated Communications Teams), in some areas. A set with weather service can be very useful in times of bad weather. Think snow, thunderstorms, tornadoes and hurricanes, depending on the area you are in.

CB radio conversations are not private. Hundreds of people may be listening in. Those with you in your vehicle or house will be able to hear both parts of the exchange.

Companions who don't share your interest in radio may feel left out if the radio is used a lot. Include those around you as much as you can, and limit the time they are excluded by keeping contacts brief. By asking which restaurant is best in a area, you may convert some to thinking CB is good. Directions and weather conditions are frequent topics in CB conversations.

Of course, you shouldn't need to know about speed traps, but others may be interested.CB radios can make a journey less boring, less tiring, more comfortable, and safer. Your family and friends should be interested in these results.
