Safety Requirements: Safety Glasses

Safety on the job is important

Safety on the job is important. Taking the proper precautions and abiding by specific safety regulations is as important as getting the job done correctly and on time. OSHA has set standards and regulations on nearly everything, from lab testing to ladders. Rungs shall be on 12-inch centers and corrugated, dimpled, coated with skid-resistant material, or otherwise treated to minimize the possibility of slipping. Safety is a concern everyone at the workplace should share. When you are working in hazardous conditions the safety practices you and your fellow employees take will make you feel safer, concentrate better, and most importantly, return home safely at the end of the day.

One of the most important areas on our body to protect is our eyes. Eye injuries can result in loss of work easier than a scrape or burn to the leg or arm. Our eyes are our most vulnerable organs, and that is why one of the first pieces of safety gear required in a potentially hazardous workplace is a pair of safety glasses. Safety eye glasses come in many shapes and styles, but all of them share two objectives. First, and most importantly, is to protect your eye from flying debris and sharp corners. Secondly, the makers of safety glasses want their product to feel relatively comfortable on your face. Safety glasses that are not comfortable, scratch easily, or fog up quickly are more likely to be removed. The wearer may then create a habit of taking off the safety glasses or resting them on top of their head. When a worker removes his or her safety glasses in the interest of being more comfortable, they increase their risk of eye injury and their risk of being reprimanded by a supervisor.

A common type of safety glasses is the clear safety glasses. Relatively cheap, these glasses are made of high strength plastics or polycarbonate materials, and like all eye and face protective devices, must comply with ANSI standards. ANSI stands for "American National Standards Institute." The standards set by ANSI are to ensure the safety gear worn by employees working in hazardous conditions is effective. In the case of safety glasses, their lenses are divided into two levels of protection, "Basic Impact" and "High Impact."Basic Impact lenses must pass a test called the "drop ball test." In this test, a one inch diameter steel ball is dropped from a height of 50 inches. The lens must not chip, break, or crack. High impact lenses must go through a more advanced test, where smaller, quarter inch steel balls are shot at different speeds. These speeds can range from 150ft/sec. for High Impact spectacles, to 300 ft/sec. for High Impact faceshields. Be sure the safety glasses your workplace provides meet ANSI standards.
