Celebrating Hanuman Jayanti Utsav In Mumbai

Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated in an exuberant manner throughout India and especially in North India to commemorate the birth of Shri Hanuman

. It is celebrated on the 15th day of Shukla Paksha, during the month of Chaitra which is Chaitra Shuddha Poornima. Hanuman is believed to be a firm devotee of Lord Rama. In Mumbai, you will find devotees visiting Hanuman temples from early morning to worship and celebrate Hanuman Jayanti.

Shri Hanuman is considered as symbol of strength and energy having eternal devotion towards Lord Rama. There are many stories describing the strength of Hanuman in which he is said to be able to assume any form at will, lift mountains and flutter speedily through the air. He is worshipped in folk tradition as a deity to conquer evil spirits. Lord Hanuman is also known by many names like Bajrangbali, Anjaneya, Anjani Putra, Vayu putra, Pavan putra, Kesari Nandan, Kesriputra, Ramdoot and Hanumant. He is also known as Sankat Mochan and remembered in difficult times. In Maharashtra he is popular as Maruti. He is considered to be one of the most powerful Hindu gods in India.

Hanuman Jayanti is the important festival of Hindus. In Maharashtra, Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated on full moon day of the lunar month of Chaitra. On this day, Hanuman temples in and around Mumbai, especially in Panvel, have spiritual discourses or Katha kirtan started at dawn. Hanuman was born at sunrise so these spiritual kirtans are continued till sunrise, and then Prasad is distributed to everyone present. There is a particular way to worship Shri Hanuman. The devotees apply tilak or sindur on their foreheads. Normally the idol of Shri Hanuman is covered with a coating of sindur. A garland made from the leaves of Banyan tree and flowers of Mandara or Rui is offered to god Hanuman. Some devotees also offer mustard oil. During Hanuman Jayanti, Hanuman temples are cleaned and decorated with rows of triangular orange colored flags called Patakas. Prayers and Hymns dedicated to the lord are offered all day long in various Hanuman temples. Hanuman Chalisa, the devotional description of greatness and accomplishments of Lord Hanuman are recited by many devotees. Thereafter idol of Shree Hanuman is ritualistically worshipped and a prasad of sunthwada prepared from dry ginger is distributed.

This festival is even celebrated at the famous and historic Lord Hanuman temple at Panvel. The idol of Lord Hanuman is Panchmukhi, offering the name "Panchmukhi Hanuman Mandir". People from various places visit this temple to get blessed by Lord Hanuman and to fulfill their wishes. There are different ways of celebrating this festival at some places, In Surat at Atal Ashram; a Laddoo weighing around 2,100 kg is prepared on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti. It is then distributed as Prasad to the devotees.

This year Hanuman Jayanti will be celebrated on 6th of April 2012. Various yagnas, homas, abhisheka, and special pujas will be held at many temples to mark the occasion. Hanuman temples scattered over the city and suburbs of Mumbai will observe an early morning pooja at sunrise to mark beginning of the Hanuman Jayanti celebrations. Bells will be ringed along with holy Mantras chanting which then will be concluded by an Aarti.
