Cell Phone Radiation Dilemma Goes On
San Francisco passed a new law last June that requires all cell phone retailers to
display the amount of radiation a cell phone emits at the point of sale. This information is already available somewhere in the user manual, which in fact also says in fine print to keep the phone away at least one inch away from your body at all times while it's on. But the law requires that the information about the SAR value (the measure of radiation level) should be displayed more openly before the consumer makes the purchase. The mobile phone industry reacted with indignation, obviously, raising the constitutionality of the resolution. But was the city right in making their decision? What does science have to say?
Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic in 2007 found frequent cell phone use can affect male fertility. Men who make calls four or more hours a day were found to have poorer sperm quality compared to those who don't. The same research team published a study more recently where they found that the sperm samples exposed to mobile phone frequencies had higher levels of free radicals and lower levels of the protective antioxidants, as compared to sperm samples not exposed to the phone radiation . The exposed sperm samples had reduced motility, function and overall health. This is cause for concern, particularly with men who are planning to raise a family.
Children are more susceptible and are more severely affected because their brains are still developing and their skulls are thinner. A two-minute call, for instance, can alter a child's brain electrical activity for up to an hour afterwards. Governments and health experts are being made aware of this, and some countries are either imposing bans or restrictions on children and teenagers under 18 from using the cell phone. Swedish scientist Leif Salford in one of his earlier studies report that teens who frequently use the mobile phone may experience an earlier onset of Alzheimer's disease.
Another research in Sweden found that cell phone radiation damages key brain cells and could trigger the early onset of Alzheimer's disease. The study, performed on rats, found that the radiofrequency radiation damaged areas of the brain associated with learning, memory and movement. Although scientists have yet to find any conclusive evidence that mobile phones damage the human brain, the research leader said there was good reason to believe that mobile phones could have the same effect on humans.
It will take some time before there is enough accumulated evidence that establishes that mobile phones pose danger to human health. Just like the tobacco health issue, years, even decades, of deliberation and debate will ensue. Hopefully, as more evidence pile up, improvements in the technology will be made to make the mobile device safer for sure. Meanwhile, it is only wise to take precautions.
