Patients can be protected from unwanted radiation by using a shield. The radiation shield be in such a way that it should protect the patient form unwanted radiation while it does not hinder the required diagnosis.

Material needed for shielding radiation should have high density. There are few metals which can be used as radiation shielding material. The best metal available is Depleted Uranium (DU), which is expensive and rarely available. Lead is a heavy metal only next to Depleted Uranium. Lead is less expensive and highly available so it is the best choice for radiation shielding.
