Cellular Confinement System
Cellular Confinement System (CSS) is the Best Management Practice that is widely recognized as a soil stabilization technology available
. It includes a variety of applications such as erosion control and soil stabilization on steep slopes, revetments and flexible channel lining systems, roadway load support and stabilization, and earth retention structures. CSS is most commonly known as geocells, consists of a three dimensional structure formed of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and that can be filled with soil, sand, aggregate, or concrete. The action of the confinement is to prevent erosion and improve the structural performance of the soil or aggregate. Typically, the CSS panel comes in a variety of cell sizes as well as in perforates and non-perforated formats. The Cellular Confinement System was originally developed by US Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) so that heavy vehicles can travel over soft surface. This system is widely used in Australia load support, erosion control, low velocity channels etc. CSS is currently manufactured by a few companies and is available through a number of proprietary distributors. The companies manufacture CSS under patent license from USACE.

Load Support
1 The unacceptable roads, parking and yard surface problems are easily solved by economical systems.
2 CSS is very beneficial for load distribution over weak soil. Base stabilization for paved surfaces and surface stabilization for unpaved surfaces are best solved with geocells.
Re vegetation on slopes
1 It creates vegetated retaining walls, steepened slopes, gravity walls and multi-layered channel systems.
2 The workers are burdened with less stress as they have to handle light weight sections compared to block wall systems.
Slope Protection
1 For long-term sustainability of embankment material, it creates a stable environment.
2 By allowing steeper slopes, it reduces land space requirements and costs.
3 Long-term solution for sustainable vegetation, permeable aggregate, hard-armored concrete or geo-membrane protection.
Temporary Stream Crossing
1 Temporary Stream Crossing is beneficial in dry washes or ephemeral streams in arid areas during non-rainy season.
2 CSS are appropriate for streams that would benefit from an influx of gravel.
Channel Protection
1 It ensures protection and stability of channels exposed to all types of erosive conditions.
2 It is very effective with low or high flows.
3 Vegetation can replace costly rip rap in drainage ditches and storm water channels.
