Cellulite, oh the horror! We have all heard of the evils of cellulite, and seen the unflattering snaps from behind of unaware celebs on the beach showing saggy bottoms with puckered skin. 90% of adult women will develop cellulite at some point in their life. But do you actually know what cellulite is and where it comes from?
What is Cellulite?
Cellulite actually consists of fat that has concentrated into a lumpy substance that resembles cottage cheese. (Ewww... sorry for just ruining cottage cheese for you forever!) This fat collects into pockets that push against the connective tissue beneath your skin, and causes the surface of the skin to dimple and pucker. The skin will often take on the texture of an orange peel. It is most commonly found on the thighs, stomach, and butt. It is not necessarily associated with being overweight, because it can also occur in thin, lean women. The most common times in a woman's life to develop cellulite is when the body is going through hormonal changes, such as puberty, pregnancy, menopause, or while taking birth control pills. This is because hormones regulate the flow of blood, fat, connective tissue, and lymphatic fluid.
Why Do I Have Cellulite?
Why, oh why indeed! There are several factors that can have an effect of your odds of having cellulite, and how much you will have. You can thank your mom, because your genetics is definitely one of the biggest factors. Your gender also has an influence; women are much more likely to have it than men. You are also more likely to have cellulite as you get older and the connective tissue in your skin begins to age. Other factors include the amount of body fat that you have, and the natural thickness of your skin.
What Can I Do?
So you have discovered some lumpy skin on your butt or thighs, and you want to do everything that you can to reduce this unsightly cellulite. In the long term, get into healthier habits such as eating better and increasing your exercise and you will lose excess body fat. If your workout routine combines aerobic exercise with strength training, it will be the most effective in fighting cellulite. A high stress lifestyle has been proven to increase the levels of the hormones that cause cellulite, so chill out and relax! Also, drinking plenty of water will keep the skin hydrated. Anti-cellulite creams are available which eliminate toxins and stimulate lymphatic drainage to improve the look of cellulite.
Cellulite is not pretty, but there is a lot that you can do to keep your skin healthy so that you have no reason to fear wearing that teeny bikini on the beach!
