Cellulitis vs. Impetigo

Cellulitis is different from impetigo although are both skin infections. For cellulitis, it is the deeper layers of the skin that is affected - the subcutaneous tissue and the dermis.

Staphylococcus and Streptococcus are the main bacteria responsible for both cellulitis and impetigo. However, MRSA or methicillin-resistant Staph aureus is known to also cause cellulitis. Other bacteria that can trigger cellulitis are: pneumococcus, hemophilus influenza, and clostridium species.

Though cellulitis can affect different parts of the body, it is the lower leg that is the most susceptible. This also goes for the arm, neck and head. There are also instances when it develops on the chest and the abdomen, especially if a person undergoes surgery or has had trauma wounds. Cellulitis can also develop in the abdominal skin, especially for individuals with morbid obesity.

Depending on the location of infection, there are special types of cellulitis. This includes:

? Buccal cellulitis - if the cheeks are affected

? Periorbital cellulitis - if the area around the eye socket is affected

? Facial cellulitis - if the face is affected

? Perianal cellulitis

As mentioned earlier, most cases of cellulitis infection are caused by the staph and strep bacteria (staphylococcus and streptococcus, respectively). However, according to studies, the most common bacteria would be the beta-hemolytic streptococci. This group would range from groups A to C as well as G and F).

For Group A, they are also called "erysipelas". It is characterized by the spread of bright red, hot circumscribed area on the skin along with a raised, sharp border. This type is common in young children. They are also known as "flesh-eating bacteria" as they can destroy tissues beneath the skin.

MRSA strains also cause cellulitis. This type is actually resistant to most antibiotics - making them more difficult to eradicate.

There are other types of bacteria responsible for cellulitis infection. For H. flu, it can affect the upper torso, arms and the face. If you contract cellulitis from a cat or dog scratch/bite, the culprit may be the pasteurella multocida bacteria. However, its incubation period is very short. It usually lasts 4 to 24 hours. For those who are exposed to seawater or freshwater, bacteria that may cause your cellulitis would be vibrio vulnificus or aeromonas hydrophilia, respectively. Last but not the least, if you've contracted cellulitis infection after getting a puncture wound, the culprit would be the pseudomonas aeruginosa.
