One of the world's finest (and most beautiful) screen thespians, Binoche again demonstrates women can be sensitive and vulnerable, without being weak or compliant. As the woman, she essentially takes on a

number of roles so convincingly [that] it makes it difficult to truly know what to make of "Certified." In his first screen outing, opera singer William Shimell is nearly as impressive.

He projects an elegant but manly presence quite befitting the character, and his rich voice well serves the film's heavy dialogue.

Ultimately "Certified" is such an intelligent and inviting encounter, it overcomes any viewer resistance to its rather slippery nature. Indeed it is a strange pleasure to submerse one's self into, thanks to the charm of its leads, the craftsmanship of Kiarostami, and his director of photography.

One of the best selections of this year's NYFF, "Certified" screens this Friday (Oct. 1) and Sunday (Oct. 3) at Alice Tully Hall. It is also worth noting, Panahi's short "The Accordion" will also screen during the festival, accompanying Pablo Larran's "Post Mortem" next Monday

I'm still at a bit of a loss to tell you what Certified Copy is about. I'm pretty sure it's about a relationship between two people, either real, faked, or imagined. I know that it stars Juliette Binoche and William Shimell, and it takes place in Italy.

Those feel like facts. But the specifics of the plot? It's all a spoiler; contradictory information is presented throughout, and I don't think there's meant to be a "true" answer. Still, it's an amazing film, and one worthy of our adoration.

James Miller (Shimell) is a writer who's just published a book entitled Certified Copy, and he's giving a lecture in Italy to present the work.

The basic theory of the book is that there's no reason for us to value the original creation of something over the reproduction of it.

A copy of the Mona Lisa or Michelangelo's David is just as beautiful as the original; it's only our perception of the copy that changes the assigned value. In many ways, this theory dovetails nicely into the theme of the film: love and relationships.
