The fundamental disparity between a CNA and an RN is the legal liability of each. If a nursing assistant fails or commits a grave error on a procedure, the law will be harsher on the registered nurse.

Here are some of the skills that Nursing Assistant (CNA) Training includes.

Universal Precaution

Hand washing, equipment and space sanitation are a few basic lessons. They are taught to wear sterile gloves and correct cleaning regimens.

Ambulation and Emergency Procedures

Certified nursing assistants need to know proper ambulation and transport procedures that lessen the stress on and ensure the stability of patients as they are taken to the hospital by emergency vehicles. They are expected to know CPR and handle a Code Blue or immediate resuscitation.

Bedside Practices

Bedpan use and cleaning procedures are also taught, ensuring that the pan is cleaned properly for reuse and also involved wiping and cleaning the patient after urination or defecation to avoid infections. Oral care is also included, not only cleaning the teeth after each meal but checking for gum, tongue, lips and the inside of the mouth for any sores, infections, cracking, bleeding or discoloration. They also aide in dressing incapacitated patients who need help in changing clothes. This is very important as the patient needs to remain as clean as possible. Positioning or changing the patients posture regularly helps circumvent bedsores. Another important skill is bedmaking as this ensures that the bed provides the patient with maximum comfort.

Aide in Activities of Daily Living

Includes proper feeding, limiting assistance to what is necessary. It is key to let patients do this as much on their own as possible. Brushing the hair and nail maintenance, making sure they is cleaned, cut and managed falls under the CNA duties as well.

Certified Nursing Assistants are also required to be able to interpret and react to a patient's call signals. Training ensures that they are able to observe vital signs, record food and liquid consumption and excretion and report any changes to these to nurses and doctors. They are also expected to assist patients on walking, exercising and stretching activities to promote physical activity. Changing dressings is another task they are entrusted with as well as cleaning rooms and changing linens. They also need to be able to prepare patients for treatment and examinations.
