Preparing for Basic Training

Basic training is a part of joining the military

. However, it can be a big adjustment. Many new recruits are leaving home for the first time, and even though they are excited about what they are doing there is some apprehension and fear. Leaving behind family and friends is difficult, but by preparing in advance you can make the transition easier.

Ask Questions

Don't go into the recruiter's office and sign the papers before you are aware of what is expected of you. Make sure you ask about how long you will be at basic training and exactly when you will leave. If you have other obligations such as school, etc., you can usually delay your entrance into basic a few months. This will give you sufficient time to get your affairs in order and prepare to leave home.

It is okay to go back and ask the recruiter more questions even after you sign up. They are there to help you make a smooth transition from civilian to military life, so take advantage of the help they will give you.

Build Your Endurance

You don't want to go into basic without having built up some endurance. That is a sure way to hate every minute of your training! Prepare now by exercising daily. Start lifting weights and doing cardio exercises every day. You will be working hard in training so start now so it isn't a shock to your system. Build up your stamina by running a longer distance every day.

In addition to getting more exercise, make sure you are eating right. Proper nutrition will help your body get strong and stay that way. Make sure you get adequate protein to help build and repair muscle. Sugar and caffeine will make your body sluggish, so start weaning your body off of these substances now.

Prepare Emotionally

Everyone knows that boot camp is not a spa experience. You will be yelled at, have less than comfortable sleeping conditions, and work your tail off every day. Prepare yourself for humiliation because it will be there. If you understand that they are molding you into a soldier and the yelling is all part of the process it will be easier for you. Military personnel are put in difficult situations and many times they have seconds to make decisions. They need to make sure you are ready for the job and can handle the stress.

Basic training helps you prepare for life in the military, both physically and emotionally. We need soldiers who are strong in body and mind to protect our interests. Intense training like this ensures that you will be the best you can be.
