Changes To The Current Theory Test

On Monday 1st November the DSA announced a major change to the current format of the Theory Test

. The proposed change is to remove the publication of the current question bank and then re-write the questions that will be used in the new theory test.

It is been seen by the Instructors and driving school as a progressive move towards a better test in terms of how pupils will have to revise for it.

The new question bank will be on the same subject matter as the old questions but are to be re-written so that they are not recognizable from the old questions ensuring that candidates have to learn to subject rather that learning by rote or memorizing the questions. The new question bank will not be available to revision to anyone which will ensure that all pupils taking the new theory test will have to revise the subject fully rather than just remembering the questions.

This new change will be introduced to tests conducted from the 1st January 2012 but licensees will have to start amending their format of question from September 2011 including the answers must not be given alongside the question but given elsewhere in the book or publication.

These changes have been implemented in order that candidates now cannot just learn by rote (memorizing questions) but will have to revise the subject thoroughly in order to understand the new questions and be able to answer them correctly. It is widely seen as a good change to be made to the test as candidates will understand driving a lot more thoroughly than before and make safer drivers.

In order to learn the whole subject of the theory test candidates will have to read from several different sources including The Highway code in order to be sure of covering all the material required to be able to answer the questions they will be faced with on the day of their theory test. The pass mark for the question part of the theory test will at the moment remain unchanged as will the number of questions asked but this change will make the test more difficult as the candidate will only see the questions for the first time when they take the new test.

The Hazard Perception part of the test remains unchanged for the time being and the pass mark is at the moment going to stay the same. For this part of the theory test the candidates will be shown 14 videos clips each one will have either one or two developing hazards that they will have to click the mouse on to register that they have spotted it. To pass this part of the theory test they will have to score a minimum of 44 out of 75 which is an average of 3 points from each clip out of a possible 5. In order for candidates to be able to prepare for this new test they must be able to find a good source for the Theory test. Instructors will be able to help their learning and advise on a good material source.
