Changing Up Your Routine With Fencing
It has become increasingly more convenient and easy to work out at home
. New machines such as treadmills, ellipticals, and stationary bicycles have allowed many people to overcome the obstacles that were holding them back from exercising and enjoying the benefits of extended good health.
For example, a business person may have been too busy to drive to the gym and work out during the day. However, with a home machine, this person can simply hop on the machine for a few minutes in the morning.
A teenager may have been unwilling to leave his or her electronics behind for a while. However, with home equipment, he or she can continue to enjoy his or her electronics while exercising.
A mother may not have been able to afford a babysitter. With home equipment she can work out while watching her children and avoid having to pay for a babysitter.
In addition, her children will see her exercising consistently and realize how important exercising is to her. Due to her good example, they may incorporate the habit of exercising into their lives earlier and they will receive the benefits of exercising earlier in the lives.
These benefits include getting physically stronger and fitter, but many mental and physical benefits as well. For example, those who exercise consistently generally experience a higher level of self-esteem and self-confidence.
These things help the exerciser to achieve more success in life. However, after a while of exercising you may notice that you are no longer improving.
This happens when you do the same thing for too long in your exercise routines. It is called reaching the plateau.
To avoid this plateau, you will need the challenge yourself and change up what you do. You can do this by changing the settings on your home machine to be longer, faster or harder.
Or you can stay motivated to exercise by throwing in something fun and interesting. One sport that many people overlook is fencing.
Fencing is a specialized type of sword fighting. It is one of only four sports to have been held at every single Olympic Games event that was held.
There are three main types of weapons that are used for fencing. The first is a foil which is use for the thrusting action.
The foil is a very light weapon. The valid touches for the foil include the torso, chest, shoulders, and back.
The weapon used to be called the Fleurette. It was created in France originally.
The second weapon is called the Epee. This weapon is also used for thrusting, but it is very heavy.
You are allowed to touch any part of the body. In addition, double touches are allowed and there is no "right of way."
The last weapon is called the sabre. The sabre is similar to the foil in that it is used for thrusting and it is very light.
The valid target area for the sabre is everything above the saddle line, but excluding the hands. There is a required right of way for the sabre.
As a beginner you will probably use the sabre. It is generally the favorite weapon to use for training.
Modern fencing, or the fencing that we know today, began in the 19th century. This kind of fencing evolved out of the 18th century French school of fencing and the Italian school of Renaissance.
The term fencing comes from English and it means "the action or art of using the sword scientifically." The word was first used in the late 16th century.
The verb to fence and noun fence, means "the act of defending" or "defense." The sword itself did not appear until the Late Bronze Age.
Today, special clothing is worn to protect the body. The things a fencer is required to wear during competition include a special jacket, a glove, a mask, pants, and shoes.
Women are also required to wear a chest protector. The equipment is made out of very thick, heavy, protective material.
Fencing competitions are usually held in the form of tournaments. There are both single competitor tournaments and team tournaments.
In addition, a single tournament may include all three weapons, both individuals and teams, or it could have a specific theme. For example, a specific tournament may be an Epee challenge only.
An Epee challenge is a competition where only the Epee can be used. This is a very fun sport that can definitely add a little spice to your workout routine.
