Chapter 2: Earth Calls to Me

In the midst of all the hard work and difficulties of farm life, I seemed to find a real joy in all of nature. Earth had a hold on my heart. The beautiful woods behind the barn and extending to the corn and tomato fields was another place of happy childhood memories, from providing an ice skating area to special places to hide buried treasures and to play all kinds of animal games. Most of the time I was either a rabbit hopping to the garden for a carrot or a deer making her bed in the high grass, sort of like Bambi and Thumper, two of my special friends.

Another beloved memory is that of my beautiful willow tree, planted by the driveway when I was two years old, and growing with me through the years, providing a winding staircase of limbs which I loved to climb. I would delight in running through the yard and orchard screaming for joy. My grandmother told me the story of the Boy Who Called Wolf, since everyone would come out of the house to see why I was screaming. As I grew older I replaced the running with sitting up in my willow tree contemplating life and what it held for me.

I can never remember not having a dog. Skippy was a little dog which my parents had before I was born. He used to go upstairs to bed with me and then come down when I was asleep. When I was five, I got my own dog, Boots, who stayed the whole night with me. My mother was wonderful in training dogs and taught me to be an expert also. Boots could do all kinds of tricks: sit up and catch her ball, balance a dog biscuit on her nose and then catch it, jump through a hoop, and wear doll clothes lying on her back in a baby buggy.

I remember my mother reading to me the stories of Black Beauty and Heidi. I would sit on the footstool with great tears rolling down my cheeks. When asked by my mother if she should stop, I would always say no because I wanted to see what finally happened to that beautiful black horse and that little girl who so loved the mountains and her daily cheese. Loving cheese as much as she did, I always looked in Gramma's refrigerator for a block of that mountain treat from which I might have a mouth-watering taste.

I remember once in my escapades in the woods, I found a baby opossum that had fallen off of its mother's back. I brought it home and put it in a Kleenex box and fed it milk with an eyedropper. It seemed that my mother never stopped scalding the eyedropper. Thus from a very early age I loved animals and set myself to be their teacher and advocate.
