The cost and the time taken to charge a depleted battery will depend on how much charge, if any, is remaining in the battery and how large the battery is. In many electric cars, the driver will receive a warning of the optimum time to replenish the battery to avoid being stranded without any charge. As a guideline, it usually costs between 0.96 to 3.36 to recharge an electric car's completely flat battery to full again.

That figure is typical for a vehicle that solely relies on battery power and has a 24kWh battery that usually offers around 100 miles to each full charge. This benchmark figure gives a cost per mile of around 0.03. Using public infrastructure, costs of charging vary depending on the city and the governing council's charges. Overnight charging is where the best savings can be made, as there is a surplus and the rates for night-time electricity are at their lowest.

How long does it take to charge an electric car?

As there are quite a few Green Cars, and a growing number of electric cars on the market now, the length of time it takes to charge a battery depends on how depleted the battery is, the type of vehicle and the type of charging point that is used.

It will normally take an electric car battery between six and eight hours to recharge fully, although many car batteries can now be topped up if the opportunity arises at a charge point. Car makers have integrated a dedicated 'fuel' gauge to Electric Cars to ensure that the driver is fully aware of how much charge is available and how many miles it will go before it completely runs out. Roadside assistance companies are considering carrying recharging equipment should an electric car run out of electricity.

Where are charging points?

Some workplaces, on-street points, supermarkets, and car parks have rapid or trickle charging points complete with weatherproof sockets. Most will charge a fee and if you have a charging point installed in your home, a qualified electrician must approve it before use. With an increase in electric cars on the road, more charging points will become available.
