The consensus on what we can and cannot recycle has never been unanimous for us here in the UK. The obvious exceptions being bottles and cans, we tend to look at other materials as not fitting the bill for the kind of thing we should recycle. Over the past few months we've been running articles on ways to counteract this trend, mainly by finding out about and discussing the various methods and varieties in recycling open to all of us. This month we're glad to have tracked down the World Cancer Research Fund's recycling program, an initiative geared towards turning our waste into valuable charity funds. The initiative is a great example of the recent body springing up to shoulder the ever-rising quota of our currently un-recycled consumables. Being highly disposable and entirely non-bio degradable, printer and toner cartridges are a real black spot for the environment where after a single use they are often ending up on landfills. But there has been a strange wave of hyper-criticism recently, as we will now investigate. Many printer companies' have environmental documentation shunning the practice of aiding cartridge recycling, for obvious economic reasons. The main problem with these texts seems to be that the brokers involved in finding an innovative solution the this one-time usage are the ones that get the blame. Shipping of remanufactured cartridges, quality issues, the current lack of official process literature all these things are reasons we should distrust these practices, say several companies. These arguments ignore the fact that many companies are distracting people from their own lack of responsibility over cartridge disposal in the light of the imperfect attempts of smaller and non-united organizations. The easiest way to counter this way of thinking is that if, while many printer firms still have no competent recycling system to offer consumers, then involving a charity in the brokering system means that during the lifetime of each cartridge (as is currently the case), we are ensuring that our used products gain funds for combating some of the most critical humanitarian issues in the world today. Indeed, when faced with the only other viable option that being, simple disposal I know most people will be making the ethically superior choice. The WCRF Recycling initiative is taking old mobile phones, sat-nav devices, printer and toner cartridges, old laptops essentially all manner of tricky consumables generally found in the workplace, but about whose disposal nobody is really that sure. By contacting this branch of the charity at recycling@wcrf.org, you can order free-post envelopes for your printer cartridges and perhaps even find out more about the life cycle of these products from the organization itself. Each cartridge will earn 1 for World Cancer Research Fund, and up to 3.50 for each old mobile phone. So for a way to change the office bad habits today, send off for your own envelopes, and start on your way to recycling for a good cause.
