Delivery

Don't forget when you are buying online to check the postages costs. Postage is not cheap these days so you will need to make sure it does not add too much to the costs of your order. Fortunately DVDs are small and light so it should not cost very much for the provider to pack and ship your order out to you. If you need the DVD in a hurry also check the estimated delivery time. Some online retailers post out purchases the same day if you put your orders through before 5pm and this means you should get it within 1 to 2 days (first class). However other retailers could post orders less frequently and this could mean you are waiting around for your DVD to arrive. If you are ordering DVDs from abroad make sure you check the seller can post to your country and also ask if there will be any import taxes/duties to pay before you buy.

Compatibility

DVDs are designed in regions which are coded and only work on the appropriate players. The Region 2 code is used for the UK, Europe, Middle East and Japan so if you have bought your DVD player in these countries this is the format you need to look out for. You could also get some DVD players that are universal and will play all region codes and this means you will be able to buy any region DVD (as long it is in UK PAL TV format).

Quality

DVD quality can vary significantly so you do need to be carefully about buying cheap imitation copies and inferior products. This is particularly important when you are buying DVDs from other countries which may not have the same manufacturing guidelines you are used to. DVD piracy is a big problem worldwide and FACT (UK trade organisation) offers lots of advice on how to avoid counterfeit DVDs. Key signs to watch out for are new DVDs that are for sale before the official release date (whilst the movie is still in the cinemas). Also ensure that the DVD case carries the company hologram on the inner sleeve and ask the seller to confirm this if you are buying online (get them to send you a picture if you want to be sure).

Returns

You do need to check the online seller's returns policy before you put through your order. You should be able to return the product and get your money back within 14 days if you have not opened the box or damaged the item (you may need to contribute to postage costs). You should also be able to get your money back as well if the DVD is faulty. Check the returns policy before you make any purchases.
