Traveling abroad does not have to cost a fortune

. It can. Some people are happy to spend a bundle on air fare. That makes sense if you want to go first class and can afford it. But if you just want to spend enough to get where you are going there are cheap international flights that you can take advantage of.

The thing to remember about airlines is that, like any business, they want to make as much money as possible. That may sound a little obvious but if you think about how they maximize their profits you can figure out where you fit in. What works in your favor is that they don't make money from empty seats.

There are some days and times when everybody wants to fly and some days and times when hardly anybody wants to fly. The airline needs to gets bodies into those seats when nobody wants them. The way any business persuades people to buy a less-than-popular item is to charge less for it.

In the US it's fairly easy to figure out when the most and least popular flying days are. For example any number of sources will tell you that the busiest flying day in the US is the day before Thanksgiving. Guess what the least popular day is. Thanksgiving day.

If your schedule is flexible enough you can depart very early in the morning, at one of the least popular departure times, on Thanksgiving day. If you are a very good planner you can save a lot of money and still get to Grandma's in time for turkey dinner.

Most people travel home on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. That's the day when ticket prices will be highest. You can save money by leaving early and traveling on Friday or Saturday. Or you can stay over Sunday and fly home on Monday.

Thanksgiving isn't the major issue for international travelers that it is for folks in the states of course. But other countries have similar holiday traffic jams. Find out what the big travel days are in the countries you are flying to and avoid them.

Business travelers make up a big part of an airline's income. They often fly on tight, inflexible schedules. They usually don't mind paying top dollar because their company is picking up their tab. Vacation travelers usually have more flexibility in their schedules and less in their budgets.

A simple rule for saving on air fares is to travel when people are least likely to be traveling on business. The least popular days for business travelers are in the middle of the week. Wednesday is a great day for travel bargains.

Another way to save money is to fly to less popular airports. Some major airports attract enormous amounts of tourist and business travel. Another airport might be a few miles farther from your destination but cheaper.

Remember that most European cities and cities in other countries too have excellent rail transportation. By landing in a smaller city and taking a train to your ultimate destination you can save big. You can have a lot of fun shopping for bargains to buy with the money you saved on cheap international flights.
