Chemicals You Should Not Wash Down Your Drain Or Sink
While the drain seems like an easy place to get rid of liquids and waste in our homes
, many things dont belong there. Some of these items may not come as a surprise. But others probably will.
Liquids to avoid dumping down the drain include:
-Household or automotive chemicals.
-Products featuring pesticides.
-Cleaning solutions, germicides and antiseptics containing mercury.
You should also avoid draining paint down your plumbing system. The fumes can be hazardous and even ignite. Paint will also coat the inside of your pipes, causing material to build up and clog your drains.
More liquids to keep away from drains include: Meat fats, lard, cooking oil, shortening, butter, margarine, baking goods, sauces and dairy products. Grease, in many different forms, sticks to the inside of pipes and will cause blockage over time.
Also, avoid getting rid of these things via your home plumbing system: Fats, oils, grease from cars and lawnmowers, coffee grinds, eggs shells, produce stickers, chunks of garbage, paper towels, flushable cat litter, rags, motor oil, transmission fluids, anti-freeze, solvents, nail polish, polish remover and medicine.
As for cleaning products, check the labels. Solutions such as liquid fabric softeners, commercial cleaners and pine oil cleaners containing quaternary ammonia sanitizers should not be used. Only use chemical-based drain cleaning solutions as a last resort for unclogging pipes.
When it comes to the outdoors, most environmental experts advise against dumping anything into the storm drain. Almost any cleaner or chemical can harm life in creeks, lakes and oceans. To some degree, the threat toxic liquids present to the environment is heightened in areas where bodies of water are present. Polluted stormwater runoff pose destructible threats to plants, fish, animals, people and drinking water sources. Over 60 percent of water pollution can be attributed to oil leaky cars, faulty septic systems, lawn fertilizers and several other human-related items.
Some tips for protecting the environment and water supply include:
- Use fertilizers sparingly. Compost yard waste. Sweep driveways, sidewalks and roads to prevent debris from entering storm drains.
- Discard unwanted chemicals at a hazardous waste site. Recycle motor oil.
- Go to a car wash instead of washing your vehicle in the driveway.
- Discard waste generated by pets in the garbage.
- Inspect and pump your septic tank system regularly
- Avoid using fertilizers on your lawn or garden.
- Use non-chlorine alternatives for your pool or spa. If you opting to use chlorine, add sodium thiosulfate or another dechlorination product before draining the water onto a porous surface such a lawn.
Following these tips for discarding liquids will benefit the environment and your health as well as preventing any hefty plumbing repairs in your home.
