Chewing The Fat - The History Of Liposculpture

It is believed that the forefather of liposculpture or at least an attempt to remove

excessive fat from a human body was by a French surgeon named Charles Dujarrier in the early 1920's. He attempted to remove excessive fat build up from the knees and calves of a well known ballerina. During the procedure he used a curette a little known spoon like medical instrument, with the intention of scraping the skin clean, the procedure failed and amputation followed.

Any advances in liposculpture didn't happen until the 1960's, whereby European surgeons were using a process where whole chunks of skin and fat were removed, this process would leave patients with huge scars and a lot of discomfort.

By the mid 70's Liposuction is invented by a pair of American gynecologist's father and son duo Dr. Arpad Fischer & his son Gorgio Fischer who were working in Italy. The tool they had invented was the cannula an electrical rotating scalpel connected to a suction device that suctioned out dislodged fat cells.

The technique had been modified slightly by the late 70's when Yves-Gerard Illouz begun using blunt tipped cannula that resulted in fewer complications and a shorter recovery time. Along with this new device they developed the technique of making several small incisions to insert the cannula. This technique is referred to as the cross tunneling technique and is still used in liposculpture today.

Good results were obtained but the dry liposuction still had disadvantages, mainly the severe blood loss and dents in the treated areas.

In 1982 Dr. Yves-Gerard Illouz modified the dry technique by injecting a saline solution in the areas to be treated it was found that by doing this bleeding was reduced and the fat deposits were dislodged more easily. The technique became known as wet liposuction.

The process was further advanced in mid 80's by Californian Dr Jeffrey Klein. He had developed the tumescent technique, which added high volumes of fluid containing (lidocaine), which led to the patient being sedated through intravenous techniques rather than general anesthesia and larger amounts of fat could be removed with less blood loss and swelling. This technique and process became known as super wet tumescence and was helped along by Dr. Peter Fodor.

Various other techniques would follow, each technique utilising the latest and most uninvasive technology to help the procedures run as smoothly as possible.

In 1997 Ultrasonic assisted liposuction (UAL) was developed in Italy by Dr. Michelle Zocchi. The process worked by liquifying the fat with ultrasonic energy making easier to remove fat. The late 80's led to laser assisted liposuction (LAL) developed in Columbia by Dr.Rodrigo Neira, these laser tipped probes induce thermal liposysis, the evaluation and benefits are still being measured against traditional techniques.

During the 1990's the tumescent technique continues to be used but new devices are being developed and tested all the time. The most successful of today's techniques the power assisted cannula (vibro-liposculpture is the most common technique used by doctors today.

Modern advances are more non invasive techniques using ultra sound or radio frequency procedures, requiring no anesthetic and leaving patients with no pain. These are used externally and break the fat down inside the skin.
