The Back Story Of Aion: The Tower Of Eternity

Aion is a massive multi-player online role-playing game (MMORPG) by NCsoft

. The game has been out in Korea for nearly a year and was just released to Europe and America at the end of September. Like other MMORPGs (World of Warcraft or Everquest) this game is rooted in fantasy and is rich in its own mythological history and back story.

Aion is set in a world known as Atreia. In addition to being the title of the game itself, Aion is also the name of Atreia's god. Aion, for the most part, seems to be a good god and is mostly interested in keeping the people of Atreia safe from harm. So, in the beginning, he created a race known as the Draken who were sent to protect the people. Unfortunately, in truly classic biblical form, the Draken rebelled against their god and were cast out. In their place, Aion created what are known as the Empyrean Lords, who were also sent to defend the people of Atreia. To their credit, these new guardians did not rebel. They worked to defend the humans against the cast-out Draken, now known as the Balaur.

This is the setting of a classic tale of good and evil. The Empyrean Lords, like guardian angels, protected the humans against the fallen angel-esque Balaur. Over time, mostly due to the Balaur constantly trying to bring about the downfall of humanity, a war began between the forces of good and evil, and the result of this epic war was an equally epic event known as the Cataclysm. The world of Atreia was, before the Cataclysm, held together by a massive structure known as the Tower of Eternity. The Cataclysm destroyed the Tower, and because of this the world itself was completely severed. Now one half of Atreia dwells in darkness while the other half lives in the light.

As players begin their quest and enter the world for the first time, it's been centuries since the Cataclysm and the great division of Atreia. Those that live in the light call themselves the Elyos and follow five of the original Empyrean Lords, now calling themselves Seraphim Lords. The Elyos live in the city of Sanctum and, overall, don't have it too bad. They have seen little change since the world was divided, except a slight increase in their beauty. This is not the case for the inhabitants of the darkness. These people are known as Asmodians, and they live in the city of Pandemonium with the other five remaining Empyrean Lords, now calling themselves Shedim Lords. The Asmodians have been warped by their centuries on the dim side of the world. Under the harsh conditions their feet have turned to talons, their hands to claws, and their eyes glow red in the darkness. The two sides blame one another for the divide, and have brooded on their mutual hatred for years. But now, another twist has been thrown their way. Where the Tower of Eternity once stood an Abyss has opened, and with the exploration of that Abyss has come the revival of the world's ancient terror: the Balaur.

The game's rich, concrete and unique history is sure to lend a feel of epic majesty to the player's experience.
