Chiropractor Bend Or | Headaches Be Gone
The most common headaches start at the base of the neck and travel upwards towards the skull
. It then radiates through the head and into the eyes. It can become a throbbing or pulsating pain behind one or both eyes. It is self-limiting and can be treated with over-the-counter medications.
Bright lights or loud noises bring on more severe headaches. They can be accompanied by nausea or vomiting and often require a withdrawal to a dark room. Over-the-counter medications do not seem to work as well and they last longer than regular headaches.
Headache Evaluation
A chiropractor will want to evaluate the condition before beginning treatment to determine if a serious condition exists. There are rare occasions that migraines and headaches are symptoms of more serious conditions such as spinal meningitis and multiple sclerosis.
Generally, a chiropractor will ask you some common question about your headaches. You can expect some of the following questions.
Where does it hurt?
What time of day does it usually hurt?
What does it feel like?
How long does the headache last?
What do you do to make the headache go away?
What were you doing when it started?
Did you notice anything when it started like a smell or aura?
Treatment for Headaches
Joint Manipulation
Chiropractors use join manipulation and mobilization as an effective treatment for tension headaches. The gentle stretching of the neck releases tension and realigns the neck to the proper position allowing blood flow and better head support thus easing the pain felt in the neck.
Massage
Do you really need to say why massage helps in relieving headaches? Anyone who has experienced a tension headache naturally tries to massage away the tension felt in the neck and temples. You see people rubbing the back, neck, and shoulder on a regular basis.
The benefits of a professional massage are well known. They do not have to be studied or reported. It is a well-known fact that massage relieves tension. What you may not know, is that massage therapy is often part of chiropractic treatment. Chiropractors use massage therapy to relax the muscles prior to spinal manipulation. This allows for an easier transition and better adjustment.
Headache Specialist
As mentioned above, some headaches require a specialist. Patients that are uncertain about their headaches should not fear seeing a chiropractor. If a chiropractor cannot treat the headaches, then the chiropractor will refer the patient to a specialist.
Generally, a chiropractor will refer patients with migraines out to either a general practitioner or a neurologist. A neurologist specializes in nerve disorders and works with migraines on a regular basis.
Headache Prevention
Many times, headaches can be prevented by maintaining good posture. Since many people work with a computer, they have a tendency to lean in towards the computer screen. This causes the head to tilt forward off the base of the neck placing strain on the neck which in turn causes headaches.
To prevent headaches, keep the head directly over the neck and tilt the computer screen where you don't have to lean over to view the screen.
