Chiropractor Chicago Il | Physical Therapy And Chiropractic-- What's The Best Way To Deal With Pain?

In recent years people's lives have become very fast-paced

. People drive farther and longer than ever before. Time is spent sitting at computer desks typing for information, education, and entertainment. Kids are gathered up for a whirlwind delivery to sports, schools, daycare, tutors, and friends' homes. All of these activities have become a source of injuries, stress, and pain that people need to learn how to combat properly.

Whether one is in pain from a sporting event, car accident, stress, or arthritis, medication can only mask the problem. Once this is realized, people turn to specialized care to fix the pain. Often either physical therapy or chiropractic care is the chosen method of treatment. These options are maintenance methods that have been developed to restore maximum function and mobility throughout a person's life. Many people have now found that combining the two have a greater effect than either of the individual care choices alone.

Chiropractic care works by manipulating the joints in the body. The spine is most commonly adjusted; however shoulders, elbows, knees, hips, or any other joint can be manipulated as well. Our joints are designed to help us move as our muscles tense. When we strain our muscles as we move or move in awkward poses, our joints can be shifted out of the ideal working position which puts pressure on nerves and causes pain. Arthritis causes bony buildup along joints that creates pain as the bony fragments grate against joint motion. This buildup can be broken down with manipulation. Chiropractors adjust the joints to realign them into the optimal position for functionality.

Physical therapy is a series of specially designed exercises to improve muscle tone and balance with a focus on any problem areas. This is most often sought after severe injuries, but can be of beneficial anytime motion is threatened. This includes after injury, stiffness due to aging, and difficult motion due to disease processes. The individualized exercises are planned to relieve pain in areas that are currently problematic, and also prevent future injuries from occurring. Physical therapy can also be a good way to start an individualized exercise program for overall general health.

Few injuries involve only the joint or only the muscle. These two areas are interconnected. Using chiropractic only allows the joints to be realigned but ignores the muscles that, when improperly exercised, can pull the joints back out of alignment. Improving muscle function without correcting the joint placement can increase strength but not alleviate pain as the nerves are still compressed. Utilizing the two methods together allows for the joints to be realigned regularly until the muscles have been stretched and strengthened enough to hold the bones in the most favorable position for use.

When pain strikes it doesn't only come when we have free time. It interferes with our daily lives including our jobs, children, and recreation. Living in a fast-paced society there is no time to stop and rest. It is in our best interests to plan for the future and find a way to prevent debilitating pain from entering our lives. Combining chiropractic with physical therapy is an ideal way to maintain a healthy, pain-free lifestyle.
