I was about thirteen when I started having neck pain
. It was unclear what was causing it, but it was keeping me awake at night and making my days less than comfortable as well. I would beat my pillows into every size and shape trying to find a position that was comfortable; I even tried sleeping with no pillow, but that didn't really work either.
The Emergence of Back Pain -
My mom finally ordered me a special neck pillow-one of those contoured foam ones-and that did help considerably. Then, not very long later-maybe a couple of years, or maybe not even that long-I started having chronic upper back pain that was eventually linked to minor scoliosis, from which no relief seemed possible.
It's In the Neck -
After years of X-rays and physical therapy, during which no one seemed to be able to tell me anything very useful, I finally sought out chiropractic care. They X-rayed me, too-but they were able to reveal something that none of those doctors had ever mentioned: the biggest problem wasn't my back at all, scoliosis or not. It was my neck.
The Military Neck -
The human neck is meant to curve forward slightly. My neck actually went so far as to curve backward slightly. What might have cause such an extreme? Any number of things: it might have happened when I was born, it might have been caused by a childhood fall, or I might have done it to myself when I was thirteen and thought that if my neck were straighter it wouldn't hurt so badly-but since it already hurt then, it's unlikely that it was in its proper position to start with.
Subluxation -
What problems can arise from such a condition? Well, I educated myself pretty quickly on something about which I hadn't known very much prior to that fateful day in my mid-twenties: chiropractic care. The idea is that subluxations, or incidences of the spine being out of alignment, result in nerve interference, which results in decreased function throughout the entire body.
Descent into Disease -
At twenty-four, I was already experiencing this state of malfunction, with allergies, headaches, digestive problems, chest pains, tendonitis, and debilitating back pain-not to mention bad anxiety. This was because the subluxations in my neck were so extreme, and the neck is a key area for transmitting messages from the brain through the nervous system to the rest of the body. My brain's messages just weren't making it.
If I hadn't gotten treatment, my body would have spiraled downward into a state of disease from which it might have been hard to recover. Sometimes it's not even one disease in particular-just a variety of symptoms similar to what I'd already been experiencing-and from which, after several years of chiropractic treatment, I'm mostly free.
Healing Naturally -
The most important idea behind chiropractic care is that the body, in its natural state, has the ability to heal itself without the interference of medications. Chiropractic helps the body attain the state in which it can heal. In my case, the kid who got allergy shots every week hasn't taken an allergy medication in five and a half years-and she's feeling great!
