Chiropractor In Lexington Sc | 5 Common Causes Of Headaches
Millions of Americans suffer from headaches every year
. In fact, the headache industry is a billion dollar industry selling over-the-counter headache medicines, prescription medications, natural remedies, herbs, eye masks, smelling salts and more. But what are the most common causes of headaches and what can you do to treat them?
The Caffeine Withdrawal Headache-
If you have ever had one then you know what I mean. It happens when your body is used to having caffeine on a regular basis and you stop your caffeine intake suddenly. Caffeine on a regular basis could mean a morning cup of coffee on the way to work. For me, it is a morning cup of Dr. Pepper. For some, it is an afternoon cup of tea. Regardless of the source, if you remove it suddenly, you may experience a headache.
Science Daily did some research to fully explain this phenomenon, which I won't go into. The cure is simple. Get some caffeine and your headache will go away as soon as the caffeine has a chance to hit your system again.
The Dehydration Headache-
This is more common than you think. In fact, it is so common that the first thing a hospital will do for someone coming into the hospital with a migraine is give him or her an IV. This action is comprised of two parts. One is that IV fluid really doesn't do any harm if it isn't needed, and the second is that if it is a dehydration headache, the fluid will get rid of the headache fast.
So, the next time you have a headache, go get a nice big glass of water.
The Tension Headache-
No surprise here. A top-five headache list could not be complete without the good old tension headache. The best way to handle a tension headache is to go lie down in a dark room. If you have lavender candles or lavender-scented fragrance around it will help soothe and relax the mind.
It is also worth noting that studies have shown that regular massages reduce the frequency of chronic tension headaches. Therefore, if you are prone to chronic headaches, it would not hurt to look into finding a good masseuse.
Eyestrain-
If it has been a while since your last eye exam, you might want to get your eyes checked out. As we age, our eyes change. Many times when we start getting headaches, it is a sign that our prescription eyeglasses need to be changed. If you just got your prescription changed and you are still getting headaches, let your doctor know. There may have been a mistake with the prescription. Sometimes the glasses are not always made correctly and the glasses may have to be changed again. You can never be too careful with your eyes.
The Allergy Headache-
Seasonal allergies cause more headaches then anyone cares to believe. If you know when allergy season is coming, you can prepare. There are over-the-counter and prescription allergy medications. You can even see an allergist that may help you overcome the allergies.
No matter what type of headache you get, there are options out there. Chiropractors, massage therapists and nutritionists can all help with your headaches. The key is finding someone who sees you as a person rather than a list of symptoms.
