Wakefield owned an inn called the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts where she served her customers with home made meals, including treats like cookies for dessert.
The story goes that one day, the good lady ran out of supply of her regular baker's chocolate that she used for her chocolate cookies. In an effort to make cookies, she substituted this with broken pieces of Nestl's semi-sweet chocolate. She thought that the broken pieces would eventually melt and mix with the batter that she was preparing.
