Choosing A Device For Personal Security: Five Points To Consider
There is no point in buying a device you won't want to carry
. Make sure the item you buy is the right size and weight for you. If you are going to put it in a handbag or purse make sure it is not too big to fit, but big enough to find quickly. Some of the devices, like tasers, are rather large. If the size is putting you off consider the fact that police research shows the TaserX26 is more effective at stopping an assailant than a nine millimeter handgun, and that's even if he or she's on drugs.
Most devices have some sort of a safety catch. Look at the pictures and be sure that you will be able to operate it. If you have arthritic hands you may need to try it out before you can decide so check on the retailers return policy.
Some women (and some men) are embarrassed about carrying a personal security device. There's no reason to be, but if that is a concern, look at the many types of stun gun which masquerade as something else. You can also find pepper sprays and attack alarms which look like, or are built into, flashlights so no one knows what you are carrying.
Consider where you go and when. What is likely to happen to you? Are you likely to get a chance to discharge a taser or pepper spray when the assailant is still some distance away or is it more likely that they would sneak up behind you. If so, a stun gun which requires bodily contact would be best, but you'd need to have it somewhere you can get to it easily.
The purpose of tasers, stun guns and pepper sprays is to hurt your attacker. You want them to leave you alone. If you think that you wouldn't have the nerve to press the trigger and release the spray or stun, there's no point in buying that type of device. It's worth remembering that police forces use tasers and the company who make them estimate that as a result 100,000 lives have been saved. The sensation of being 'tased', stunned or sprayed with pepper spray is far from pleasant, but unless the circumstances are extraordinary, it isn't permanent. If you think you might be tempted to hang around to check that the attacker you just sprayed is OK, it might be better for you to have an attack alarm. These are designed to be loud enough to attract attention, but many are also loud enough to surprise an attacker, giving you a chance to get away.
Remember your safety is the prime concern. You are as much part of the system as the device is, so choose accordingly.
