Choosing A Plastic Surgeon: Your Research Is Essential
Picking a plastic surgeon can be as easy as choosing a name out of the phone book
. The problem with that method is that you are basically going in blind. If you believe that every cosmetic enhancement doctor is providing the same level of skill and service, you are highly mistaken. It takes a certain level of skill and knowledge simply to become a doctor, that much is true. But as they say, even the worst passing student in a medical class is still called a doctor. Combine that with the fact that there are few regulations on which medical doctors can perform cosmetic surgery and you have a clear and present need for research. Here's how to choose a doctor you can trust.
Referrals
If you can get a referral from either a doctor you already trust or a friend who has nothing but raves about their experience with a particular plastic surgeon, there are few better ways to find your guy. You can be certain that you're getting the truth, which is something that can't be said for reading reviews on the internet, for instance. It is certainly something that can't be said for looking at advertisements. A personal or professional referral carries a lot of weight. That said, a doctor perfect for one person may not be for another. Ask some questions about the doctor before you decide to take the referral on faith.
Background
Not everyone is going to be in a position to get a trusted referral for a plastic surgeon. If you don't have a primary doctor and you don't know anyone who has had work done (or will admit to it, in any case), you'll have to strike out on your own. That's fine. With the help of your local phone directory or the internet, you can easily compile a list of the doctors in your area who perform the procedure you want to get. From there, start looking at their background and credentials. Look at their education. Have they been specially trained in cosmetic surgery or is their background in something else? Look at their experience. Most doctors will be all too happy to trumpet their years of practice.
Schedule a Consultation
When you've decided on a good plastic surgeon, schedule an initial consultation. Most doctors charge a nominal fee for this meeting, which makes it impractical to meet with several before making a decision. This is unfortunate, but it is the nature of the game. The good news is that many clinics will put your initial consultation fee towards the cost of the surgery should you choose to go through with it. Don't spend so much on the fee that you can't afford to walk away from it, however. You should always leave your options open.
