Choosing Hospice Care
My first experience with hospice care was when my maternal grandmother struggled
with medical problems including Alzheimer's disease and congestive heart failure. The support of hospice care volunteers and professionals allowed her to finish her life in relative comfort and provided our family with the medical support we needed.
Hospice care consists of services provided to terminally ill or end-of-life patients and focuses on palliative care, or alleviating uncomfortable symptoms of disease or other illnesses. Medical support is provided, but patients receiving hospice care are not undergoing treatments or therapy to cure any disease. Many patients ask for hospice care in their home, which is often optimal for patient comfort, but hospice care can also be administered in a comfortable hospice care center or a nursing home.
The benefits of hospice care, besides providing comfort, care, and services for terminally ill patients, include the option of continuing medical support after a patient or their family have made the life decision not to pursue a cure or to receive heroic life saving measures. Through hospice care, these patients still receive medical support and care, ensuring they are comfortable and their questions are answered, while their wishes to avoid further disease-fighting treatments and life saving measures are respected.
Hospice care also provides valuable services to the families of terminally ill patients. Some patients don't have family members who are available to provide the round-the-clock end of life support they need, and some family members simply don't have the appropriate medical knowledge to keep the patient as comfortable as possible. Hospice care gives the family members of patients support and peace of mind, knowing their loved one is receiving the care and support they need. Hospice care is conducive to as much involvement from the patient's family as possible, so the people closest to the patient can still be involved and provide love, support, and care to the level they are able and willing.
People may struggle internally when hospice care is suggested for a loved one or for the patients themselves. Hospice services carry the connotation of terminally ill patients or a quickly approaching end of life, and it can be difficult to ask for or accept services that may seem to confirm that a patient's end of life is near, though of course requesting hospice care can in no way shorten the life of a patient.
It's important to consider hospice care at the appropriate time and ask for the support of medical personnel and other people close to you when making the decision. Ultimately, once no more life saving medical options will be performed, choosing hospice care can only make a patient more comfortable and can allow them to lead a more comfortable life and spend higher quality time with the people they love. For patients who do not wish to pursue medical interventions to treat an illness or disease, for patients who are near the end of life and prefer to remain in their own home, or for patients who are terminally ill, hospice care is a loving, wonderful option.
