, at least on the Internet. The Internet provides a cloak of anonymity for people who feel as though they can attack and belittle anyone they choose without repercussion. For those who are victims, it can seem as though there is nothing you can do. Fortunately, thats not the case. You can find ways to take action and find those who are responsible. An IP trace is one of the best things you can do if youve been having trouble with stalkers and people who are harassing you and following you around online.

The trace is relatively simple to understand. Each computer and device on the web has a number assigned to it. This numerical address is able to provide information about the location of the device and the person using it. Although it could happen with some individuals, you arent likely going to be able to get the home address of the offender, and thats a good thing.

The last thing you want to do is to have the online altercation become a physical confrontation. Instead, the IP trace is going to be able to provide you with the name of the Internet Service Provider that the offending individual uses. If they are posting information about you on their blog or website, then the service provider will be able to take action against them.

In most cases, service providers are going to have some type of terms of conduct agreement with the people who use their service. When someone breaches that contract, he or she will likely get a warning at first. If they continue, the ISP can shut them down.

If you are able to find the actual location, or at least the general area from which the attack originated with your IP trace, you will have more information that you can provide to the authorities if needed. If you find that the threats are coming from someone who lives in the same city as you do, then you will certainly want to contact the authorities to let them know about those threats. While Internet threats are still relatively new, they are cause for alarm and they can escalate. The authorities will want to head off a problem before it gets out of hand.

Find good software that can perform your IP trace for you, and make sure you have it on hand. You dont want to have to deal with someone online who is offensive or on the attack, but knowing that you have the ability to trace them and stop them is peace of mind you need.
