Choosing Oak Flooring For Your Home
One quick way to increase the value of your home is to install new oak floors
. These floors are durable and beautiful and can add value to any space they are installed in. When you look at an oak floor you will instantly get the feeling of warmth. It makes your space feel very comfortable and soothing and this is the feeling that many people are looking for when they choose this type of wood for their floors.
If you were to look closely at the patterns that are displayed in the grain patterns of an oak floor, you would almost be able to count the life-rings from the tree. There are subtle patterns in a brown and yellow colour that tell a story about the life of the tree. It has a very course texture which makes the patterns in the grain stand out.
Another interesting fact about oak is that when it is used for hardwood floors it sometimes gives off a hint of grey in the colour. These colours are amazing when they are together and are really what is responsible for the warm feeling that it brings to a room. There are certain things you should be looking for when you have decided on adding oak floors to your home.
First, be on the look out for short pieces of wood. When oak is cut in to short pieces it makes the flooring look very cheap. You want to have long pieces of wood on your floors so you can see the beautiful natural patterns that come out when the floor is finished.
When you find short pieces of oak flooring for sale, you can almost be sure that they were not handled with the care required and you could find yourself disappointed with the end result.
There are certain grades that are used when classifying wood. You should look for the 'character' grade if you want a variation in the wood. This means that there will be many visible knots and that the colour will not be a consistent shade. This is called the 'character' grade because the wood has a lot of character and uniqueness.
If too much character is not what you are looking for then you may consider the Nature grade. The Nature grade has a mixture of the 'character' grade wood and the higher grade, Prime Grade wood. This will serve to even out some of the characteristics that can be found in strictly 'character' boards. It still has some character and uniqueness but it will not be over the top.
The Prime Grade wood is the most even and consistent wood that you can purchase. This wood has very few visible knots and the colour is spread evenly through the wood. The variation in the colour will be very little to none at all. This grade of wood will give your oak flooring a consistent look from one wall to the next. While each grade has their own benefits, which one works best for the person that is purchasing it is truly a matter of their own personal taste.
