Choosing The Best Birth Control Method

At the last count there were more than 20 birth control methods ranging from abstinence to tubular ligation and even withdrawal

. Some are so simple to apply while others may need the assistance of a doctor. Yet, even with this wide range of choices, women still have a hard time deciding which one is best for them. This has become even tougher with the issues surrounding this subject, such as sexually transmitted diseases and the very recent Mirena IUD lawsuits.

There is no one best method for anyone. The choice would really depend on the circumstances and the need of the woman. For spouses, ideally it should be a decision made by both partners. In general, the criteria would cover effectiveness of the method, the cost involve, physical attributes of the woman or man in some cases, purpose of the birth control, potential side effects, and the convenience desired.

Effectiveness should be a major consideration since not all methods have the same effectiveness rates and one does relish the idea of an unwanted pregnancy after supposedly taking precautionary measures. According to the book Contraceptive Technology, the most effective methods are those using hormones which have a pregnancy rate of less than one percent. Included under this category might be the hormonal implant, combined pill and the hormone shot. Other methods falling below the one percent rate are the copper IUD and the surgical procedures of vasectomy for men and tubular ligation for the women.

Those that may be considered as risky would be the cervical cap and the vaginal sponge. The cervical cap would seem more effective for those who have not experienced child birth (nine percent) than those who have had children (26 percent). For women who had previous birth experience, the vaginal sponge has a pregnancy rate of nine percent while those with children had a rate of 20 percent.

If the hormonal methods are the most effective, then the pills and IUDs should be the best option, one might argue. Not necessarily, it might be the best but you might be susceptible to its side effects or you do not want to gain weight or experience other discomforts. So in choosing the right birth control method you have to consider all other factors.

Some women may find it very uncomfortable inserting devices in their bodies which rules out IUDs and other implants. Others may put priority in the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases so they will settle for condoms. Both spouses may have decided not to have any children so either one of them can have a vasectomy or a tubular ligation. A woman might find it inconvenient or expensive taking a pill on a regular basis and would rather go for something more permanent such as an IUD. Still others may find using contraceptives against their religious beliefs that the alternative would be the natural or the rhythm method.

Indeed, choosing a birth control method is not an easy decision to make. A lot of factors should be taken into consideration. Personal goals, preferences and needs should be examined carefully as well as that of the family.
