What do you want from your pergola?

If you would like to extend your living space and almost add an extra room to your house, then an attached style might be just what you are looking for. As the name suggests these are attached to the side of your home and could be used for entertaining friends or simply enjoying your garden in summer.

If you are looking to link one part of your garden with another, then a path style would be what you are after. With this style, you can choose what type of surface you would like for the path beneath you may want to have paving stones, grass, chippings, slate.

If you are after a quiet place to sit and have limited space in your garden, an arch style would likely be your best option.

If you would like to draw attention to part of your garden, then a corner style might suit you well. Nestled in the corner of your garden, the design of this style acts to draw you in.

What look are you after?

If you would like to add a touch of the Orient to your back garden, then an Asian style would be the perfect choice, with its curved rafters.

Although typically made from wood, you do not have to limit yourself to that. The vertical posts could easily be constructed from stone or concrete if you wished and it is not uncommon for the horizontal rafters to be made of some sort of metal.

If choosing wood, then there is the question of which wood. Cedar, Cypress, Ipe, Pine, and Redwood are just some of the woods used in the pergolas designs. More rustic looking timber if available if that is the style you are trying to create.

Once you have decided on the style of pergola, you need to make the decision as to whether you will hire someone to build it or whether you will get the pergolas designs and construct it yourself. For those with an enthusiasm for DIY, the latter may not be so difficult, particularly as there are plans available on the internet.
