Choosing The Right Longboard Deck
Whether you need a longboard to get to class, to the beach
, or just enjoy riding down the hill in your neighborhood, purchasing one can help you get where you need to go. When first looking to purchase, you should gain some knowledge of the various deck options available.
The deck is the most important part of the board because it is the actual part you stand on when skating. Make sure that the board you get has good grip and will provide you with the experience you want.
You need to decide whether to get a concave, convex, or flat board. The type you choose will make a big difference in the feel of your board. Concave is the most common style of deck and provides the most support while allowing the rider sharper turning capabilities.
You can tell if a deck is concave by looking at your board head-on from the front at ground level. If the edges of the deck curl down to form a parabola, or a U shape then it is concave.
Furthermore, convex boards are the opposite of concave boards and form an upside-down U shape. These convex boards are harder to find and offer less support but give more freedom of movement.
Flat decks are exactly what it sounds like. They are a mixture of both convex and concave decks and allow for sufficient turning and freedom of movement.
When looking at a deck from the side at ground level you will also be able to notice that the board is flat, rockered, or cambered. You will want to know the difference so that you can make the best choice for your needs.
A cambered board rises in the middle and allows for more flexibility. Some people enjoy the smooth ride of cambered boards.
Rocked decks form an inverted arch resulting in less flexibility. However these decks offer a unique cradling feel that tends to swing you side to side when going in and out of turns. Many people enjoy the feel that rocked decks provide.
Keep in mind, that flexibility in a deck is a very important component when choosing one. The flexibility is the amount of pressure you can put on the deck before it snaps.
Some boards can flex all the way to the ground and there are others that are as extremely stiff. To this end, more flexibility allows for a smoother ride by absorbing the impact of rough surfaces and harsh turns.
Flexibility is generally a good thing, but a board with too much flexibility tends to wobble at high speeds due to the instability of the flexible deck. Stiffer boards are better for certain uses.
They are bumpier but they offer greater stability with speed and are preferred for downhill bombing. Downhill bombing is a longboarding term that means riding down steep hills or mountains.
If you are planning on going down lots of hills you will want a board with at least some stiffness to help keep you board steady at the higher speeds. As you gain knowledge about decks and other parts you will be happier with the longboard that you choose to purchase.
